La Baigneuse - Ingres par @bigbenstreetart

It’s hard to think of a time before fast fashion, isn’t it? Our culture has shifted so quickly and drastically towards low-priced goods, but just decades ago, people paid a lot more for their garments and owned far less of them. In the book “Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion”, the author writes that: “In 1930, the average American woman owned an average of nine outfits. Today, we each buy more than 60 pieces of new clothing on average per year”. To give you another perspective on how much consumption has quickly increased - the average person in a developed country buys 400% more clothing than they did 20 years ago (@getredressed). Consumer culture has evolved to expect rock-bottom prices and a never-ending selection of goods. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While fast-fashion is a complex economic issue, one of the ways to curb this excessive consumption is to buy the best quality you can afford. On my blog I’ve written about why I think designer handbags (for example) can be an wise investment. While it’s true that prices of many designer goods are inflated simply due to brand name, it is also true that consumers must pay a higher price for quality goods (by this, I don’t mean that more expensive = better quality. And I’m referring to brand-new items...many quality items like the bag pictured here can be bought secondhand!). By paying more, there is a higher likelihood that the people who made your goods were paid fairly and that higher quality materials/techniques were used.
